Russia is marking the Day of Slav Writing and Culture today. President Dmitry Medvedev said that the day will promote values of national culture and teach respect for the language, RIA Novosti reports.
Head of the Kremlin Administration Sergey Naryshkin opened the ceremony. He said that the alphabet invented by Cyril and Methodius “opened way for enlightenment and development of the many-sided Slav culture, uniting peoples for centuries”.
Naryshkin added that development of the Russian language is a priority. He underlined the role of the Russian Orthodox Church inorganizing the event and teaching the population.
Moscow Mufti Albir-hazrat Krganov said that the day unites all Russians.
The Patriarch of Moscow and All-Russia Kirill reminded about the need to remember spiritual and cultural-historical roots. Kirill made a speech at the opening of Day of Slav Writing and Culture at Vasilievsky Spusk.
The patriarch believes that it will be hard to preserve the country strong without opening holy texts.
The philological faculty of the South Ossetian State University is celebrating the event, Res said.
Celebrations started at the Dmenisskaya School on May 21. Teacher Florida Fataliyeva, supported by the Chairman of Yedinstvo Party, Z. Kokoyev, and head of the Russian Cooperation office in South Ossetia, M. Stepanov, prepared a performance.
