June 22nd,1941, is one of the saddest dates in the history of all the former Soviet republics. In the Great Patriotic War, the bloodiest war of the XXth century, Russia lost 26,549,000 people.

The council of the heads of the CIS countries adopted an address of the countries of the Commonwealth to the nations of the CIS and the international community on the 70th anniversary of the start of the Great Patriotic War.

The war was the hardest challenge in the history of the nations of the Soviet state, and the peoples managed to overcome it, RIA Novosti reports.

Mourning ceremonies are being held today, in cities of Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and other former Soviet republics. In Moscow a minute of silence took place.
