Russians jailed on spy charges in Georgia

The Batumi City Court has sentenced 9 people for spying for Russia in
Georgia, Trend reports.


The court sentenced four Russians and five Georgians. They were given
between 11-14 years in prison.


Yuri Skrylnikov, a Russian citizen, was sentenced to 14 years of
prison. The Georgian special services say he had links with the Main
Reconnaissance Directorate of the Russian General Staff.


Russian agents and several pilots of Georgia were providing Moscow
with information about the Georgian military even during the war in
August 2008.


The Georgian Interior Ministry said on October 29 that the Enver
Operation in Adzharia ended with detention of 13 people in Georgia for
espionage for Russia. Four of them are Russians.


Deputy Director of the Department of the Georgian Interior Ministry
Otar Orzhonikidze said that they revealed an espionage network of
Russia. They started counter-espionage in 2006.


The legal process started on April 15. 13 were under trial. A closed
process continued against 9 suspected spies on June 29. They refused
to admit guilt.
