Georgian prisoners to swap cells for monastery life

Some Georgian prisoners will be able to serve out their sentences in monasteries rather than jails when a new law comes into force on Saturday, Georgia Online said.

The list of prisoners will be approved by the head of the country’s Orthodox Church.

“It is expected that they will be people serving short sentences for minor offenses,” a justice ministry spokesperson said.

The move comes as part of reforms to Georgia’s criminal code.
