Moldavian defense minister says sales of weapons to Armenia illegal

Moldavian Defense Minister Vitaly Matinuts insists that the deal on sales of weapons and ammunition to Armenia is illegal, News.am reports.

Marinuts refused to comment the statement of Maldavian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Igor Bodyu at the parliament.

According to media reports, Moldavia sold ammunition to a Latvian company. The ammunition was transported using the Il-76 plane from Benghazi (Libya) to Armenia. It arrived in Moldavia to fulfill a contract of the Moldavian Defense Ministry and the Latvian company with office in Riga.

The plane took off at the airport of Merkulesht on September 13.

Armavia said that it never had Il-76s, press-secretary of the company Nana Avetisova said. She added that Armavia only carries out passenger flights and no freighting.

The Main Directorate of Civil Aviation of Armenia says that the information is false.
