State Duma introduces bill on compulsory knowledge of Russian language for migrant workers

A group of deputies from the United Russia party has introduced a bill in the State Duma on compulsory knowledge of the Russian language for migrant workers, RIA-Novosti reports.

The bill specifies that the Russian language skills should be documented. Documents proving knowledge of the Russian language include certificates of education obtained in the former Soviet Union before 1st September 1991 or in the Russian Federation after 1st September 1991.

A certificate of passing the state test on knowledge of Russian can also be considered proof of knowledge of Russian.

At the moment, there are more than 160 centers in Russia organizing Russian language tests certified by the government.
