Chief rabbi of Russia congratulates country

The Chief Rabbi of Russia, Berel Lazar, has congratulated people on People's' Unity Day and underlined the need to teach children respect for other peoples and cultures, RIA Novosti reports.

Russia has been marking the day since 2005. The day was set to commemorate the events of 1612, when the militia of Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky liberated Moscow from Polish intervention. It was the historic end of the Time of Troubles of Russia.

Lazar says the new generation needs a feeling of responsibility for the country, the patriotism that allowed the country to overcome all challenges.

The chief rabbi expressed regret that the propaganda of unity of peoples stopped along with the existence of the Soviet Union. Peoples' Unity Day is a great opportunity to put the issue at the center of attention.
