Tests of Russian language become compulsory for migrant workers

Migrant workers to Russia will be tested for knowledge of the Russian language. It will cost them about 2,500 rubles to sit the exams. The figure was announced by Constantine Romodanovsky, head of the Russian Federal Migration Service, RBC reports.

The same sum is needed for citizenship testing.

The Russian Parliament passed the bill on November 22. Migrants willing to work in the sphere of housing and utilities, trade or social services need to display a knowledge of the Russian language.

A document on education issued in a former Soviet state before the 1st of September 1991 will prove knowledge of the language. A certificate of state testing for the Russian language may also prove knowledge. The bill also mentions that the demands for knowledge of the language should be below elementary.
