New Year celebrations have been canceled in several districts of the Russian North Caucasian republic of Dagestan, Interfax reports on Thursday.
The decision was made in order to continue promoting Muslim traditions. Muslim clerics have called for the cancellation of this 'Soviet and pagan' holiday for several years.
According to recent polls, local residents are expressing more and more interest in Islam and Muslim traditions.
