Kazakh police to purchase illegally stored firearms

The Kazakh Interior Ministry plans to purchase illegally stored firearms, ammo and explosives, Kazinform cites a police spokesman as saying.

People voluntarily handing weapons will not undergo any punishment. The process will be organized from February 1 to March 2012.

Oraz clarified that the government will pay a sum of 10-100 monthly calculation indexes per weapon and ammo. Weapons, ammo and explosives will be received at any territorial police station.

Such initiative took place in 2008. The police collected 14,144 units of weapons. The measure reduced armed crime cases by 19.2%, the Interior Ministry says.
