Iran is one of the top 10 seismologically-risky places of the world. An earthquake with a magnitude of over 7.0 happens once in every ten years. The earthquake in Bam, south-east of Iran, in December 2003 killed over 31,000 people and injured about 42,000. The Ancient City of Bam and its fortress were destroyed.
