Batumi to take down monument to victims of Great Patriotic War

Batumi is taking down a monument to victims of the Great Patriotic War, ANS reports.

Workers are building fence around the monument and making no comments. Batumi City Council ordered the monument to be taken down in July 2011

Free Georgia, an opposition party, has protested against the initiative and demands respect for people who sacrificed their lives to stop fascism.

This is not the first case of taking down a monument to victims of the Great Patriotic War. A Soldiers’ Honour Memorial in Kutaisi was destroyed in December 2009. A girl and her mother died, two other citizens were injured while protesting.
