Today marks the 65th birthday of the outstanding physician,
heart surgeon and member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences,
Renat Suleimanovich Akchurin. He was born on April 2nd 1946 in
Uzbekistan to a Tatar family. In 1971 he graduated from the Sechenov
Moscow Medical Institute and was soon sent to specialize in the clinic
of the famous American surgeon Michael DeBakey in Houston. After
returning from the United States he was appointed head of the
Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Myasnikov Institute of
Clinical Cardiology at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.
A renowned authoritative and respected expert, he has developed a
unique school in the field of vascular and cardiac surgery.
In November 1996, he performed a coronary bypass surgery on the heart
of the first Russian President, Boris Yeltsin.
Renat Suleymanovich is the author of more than 300 scientific
publications, the initiator and one of the main developers of the
Federal program "High Technologies in Medicine", a board member of the
DeBakey International Surgical Society (1995) and a number of other
international and Russian cardiological institutions and societies.
