Schools financed by the Russian Defense Ministry will close in Armenia
due to Russian military reforms. The reforms will switch military
service to a 12-month contract, without families. Schools affected
include No19 for children of the 102nd Russian military base in
Giumri. This school has 429 students and 77 teachers. Parents report
that the school has already been closed.
School No21 near in Kanaker, the suburbs of Yerevan, has 350 students
and 70 teachers. The school asked the Russian embassy in Armenia to
help. According to Gazeta.ru, the embassy promised to help, by sending
a proposal to Moscow to keep the school running. The embassy did not
exclude the possibility that the school may become private.
