In Azerbaijan 50 criminal groups and gangs involved in drug trafficking have been neutralized, the Chief of the Directorate for Combating Drugs in Azerbaijan, Major-General Hazi Aslanov, told a meeting of the board of the Ministry, Trend reports, citing the press service of the Ministry of the Interior.
It was noted that as a result of operational-search activities, last year in the country 2636 instances were identified in connection with drug trafficking, of which 817 were in connection with the sale of drugs; 50 groups, consisting of 131 members, were neutralized.
557 kg of drugs have been withdrawn from illicit use, including 164.8 kg of hashish, 52.2 kg of heroin, 14 kg of opium, 298.8 kg of marijuana, and 27 kg of other drugs. The import of 28.6 kg of drugs by way of illegal smuggling has been prevented; 366 tons and 777 kg of narcotic plants in the form of green mass have been destroyed.
From 22 foreign nationals prosecuted for crimes related to drugs, 53.9 kg of various drugs have been confiscated.
392 crimes were disclosed and 295 persons prosecuted in connection with the sale of drugs in large numbers in 2011, including three foreigners.
