Three republics of the North Caucasus - Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachaevo-Cherkessia - are commemorating the victims of the Caucasian War, RIA-Novosti reports. This day is also marked abroad by descendants of Circassian immigrants (Muhajirs) - in particular in Turkey, Syria, Jordan and the United States.
This war is associated with the accession of the North Caucasus to the Russian Federation as a result of a war which lasted for more than 100 years - from 1763 to 1864. The war ended on
May 21, 1864 with a military parade of the Russian army in the tract of Kbaadu (now the resort of Krasnaya Polyana). This day is considered to be the last day of the Caucasian War.
This day is marked in the republics today with the laying of flowers and various events including concerts and readings.
In Kabardino-Balkaria the commemoration of the Caucasian war victims has been a day off since 1992.
