Death toll tops 100 in South Russia

According to the latest information, Russia’s worst flood in decades killed at least 103 people and injured 91 in Krasnodar Territory, with the majority of the casualties in the town of Krymsk, RIA Novosti cites the Interior Ministry as saying.

Irina Kizilbasheva, a journalist from the local TV channel, told the on-line news website Gazeta.ru that a powerful stream of water had swept through Krymsk overnight.

“People are distressed, they say that no one had warned them about the flood. We have found several streets where people’s corpses were lying on the ground…” Kizilbasheva said.

Those people whose houses have been totally destroyed by the floods will receive 100,000-rubles compensation (about $3,000), Russia’s Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov said on Saturday, adding that 50,000 rubles ($1,500) will be paid to residents whose dwellings had been partially destroyed.
