History and culture of Mountain Jews of Caucasus described in new book

A new popular science book ‘History and Culture of the Mountain Jews
of the Caucasus’ has been published in Jerusalem at the Jewish
University. It is the first book published by a group of specialists
on the culture and history of the Mountain Jews of the Caucasus. In
addition to all the cultural aspects the book also concerns the issue
of Eretz Israel.

Publication of the book would have been impossible without
contributions from the local communities.

The book has a glossary of basic Jewish concepts. The book includes a
wide range of Mountain Jewish words and word combinations. The main
consultants of the book are professor Mordechai Altshuler and Mikhail
Zand (Israel). Rabbis Adam Davidov (Israel) and Elazar Nisimov
(Azerbaijan) helped to acquaint readers with the traditions. The head
of the Mountain Jewish community in Baku, Semen Ikhiilov, and the head
of the Krasnaya Svoboda Mountain Jewish community assisted. The
authors express particular gratitude to the head of the Azerbaijani
state committee on religious institutions, Gidayat Oruzhev, and
professor of the Ethnography and Archeology Institute of the
Azerbaijani National Academy, Rauf Huseynzade.

The book was prepared at the Institute of Strategic Research of the Caucasus.
