USSR Marshal Sergey Sokolov has died in Moscow at the age of 101, Interfax cites Nikolai Deryabin, head of the office of the Club of Russian Military Commanders, Interfax reports.

Sokolov was the oldest of the four marshals of the Soviet Union.

Marshal Sokolov is the Hero of the Soviet Union, veteran of the Battle at Lake Hasan, Great Patriotic War and the war in Afghanistan. He was the USSR Defense Minister in mid-1980s and was dismissed after Mathias Rust on the Red Square. Sokolov was an advisor of the defense minister since 1992. He was put on the Russian Book of Records and received a related certificate on July 20.
