Cossack detachments in Kuban detain more than hundred offenders on first day of duty

Cossack detachments began their work on Saturday in the Krasnodar Territory and detained more than 100 offenders on the first day of their duty, RIA Novosti reports citing regional governments.

The Cossack detachments have been introduced in the Krasnodar Territory for the first time in Russia by order of the governor of the territory, Alexander Tkachev.

The Cossacks are expected to protect public order in crowded places, including during holiday festivities. Cossacks act only along with the police. They supervise public order without weapons.

The controversial initiative of Alexander Tkachev has been severely criticized by the mass media. The governor excused himself by claiming that his critics have no idea about the customs and everyday life of the Krasnodar Territory.
