On September 1 police detained activists of a human rights campaign "Sing for
Democracy", who tried to hold a protest in front of the Russian
Embassy.
The members of the group attempted to protest against the imprisonment
of members of the punk group Pussy Riot, who have been sentenced to
two years imprisonment after organizing a punk prayer at the
Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow.
The participants were holding pictures of the convicted women with slogans:
"Freedom for Pussy Riot!" and "Free the music!"
The police did not allow them to approach the embassy of Russia.
The organizers of the rally - IRFS (Institute for Reporters Freedom and
Safety) Director Emin Huseynov and Rasul Jafarov - were detained and
taken to the 20th police station. A protocol was drawn up on their
unauthorized street rally, and they were given a warning.
Commenting on the situation to Vestnik Kavkaza, political scientist
Fikret Sadykhov expressed his opinion that the Pussy Riot group is not
widely supported in Azerbaijan.
