Georgian minister for corrections and legal assistance resigns over torture accusations

 

Khatuna Kalmakhelidze, Georgian Minister for Corrections and Legal Assistance,said that she had filed a resignation note to Prime Minister Vano Merabishvili due to tortures at Tbilisi Prison N8, Trend reports.

Officials of the People’s Protector of Georgia visited the Gldansk Prison to meet convicts on Tuesday-Wednesday night.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili promised to punish all people involved in tortures, RIA Novosti reports.

The president called the public protests in Georgia over the incident justified and ordered the police to find the people responsible for tortures.
