Water level of Iran's Lake Urmia continues to fall

According to official statistics, of Lake Urmia's water level has fallen by 70%. Today
every litre of lake water contains 400 grams of salt, Trend reports
citing the Iranian news agency MEHR.

Lake Urmia occupies an area of about 6000 square km. During the
migratory period, the lake becomes a temporary home for migrating
birds. The drying up of the lake has an impact on the flora and fauna
of the region.

Last year, due to the drying up of Lake Urmia, protests took place in the towns of Tabriz
and Urmia, as a result of which dozens of Iranian
Azerbaijanis were arrested.
