Armenian president calls emigration catastrophic

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan met people in Alaverdi and discussed emigration, 7or.am reports.

The president said that the population could not decrease any longer. He noted the need to solve the problem of repatriation.

Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said that the demographic situation was unfavorable. The National Statistical Service said that 11.5% of the population was above the employable age. The UN has a different figure – 7-8%.

The PM believes that the problem is rooted in the low birth rate and emigration of about 1.2 million people in the last 20 years. This includes the departure of young and educated people who found jobs abroad and adapted fast.
