Today, in Derbent, the southernmost city of Russia was solemnly opened of the Jewish Community Center, RIA Dagestan reports. The event was attended by the President of the Republic of Dagestan Magomedsalam Magomedov, the Chairman of the Dagestan Government Mohammed Abdullaev and the Chief Rabbi of Russia Berel Lazar, as well as heads of municipalities of cities and regions of Southern Dagestan.
Construction of the center was started in May 2009. On the site of the old synagogue was built 3-storey building in which there is enough space for religious rites, a kindergarten, banquet hall, museum, library, hotel, etc. The center was built by the Jewish community of Derbent.
