Chechnya and Ingushetia mark Dzhigit Day

Russia's North Caucasian republics of Chechnya and Ingushetia are marking Dzhigit Day.

Dzhigit is a word of Turkic origin which is used in the Caucasus and Central Asia to describe a skilful and brave equestrian, or a brave person in general.

Dzhigit Day is celebrated annually on March 1st under the auspices of the Ingush ministry of culture.

On this day people watch horse races and dance the lezghinka, a traditional Caucasian dance.
