Guriy Marchuk, 87, the last President of the USSR Academy of Sciences, has died in Moscow.
Marchuk was born in Petro-Khersonets in the Orenburg Province on June 8, 1925. He fought during the Great Patriotic War. He started studies at the Leningrad State University after the war. In 1957, he became a PhD of Physical and Mathematic Sciences. He became a corresponding member of the USSR AS.
Marchuk became the Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR and Deputy Chairman of the USSR State Committee for Science and Engineering in the early 1980s. He was the USSR AS President in 1986-1991 and became an honorary member of the RAS Presidium. He was in charge of the department for mathematic modeling of physical processes at the Moscow Institute for Physics and Engineering in 1980-2003.
