Police break up rallies in Izmir and Ankara

Turkish police yesterday broke up opposition rallies in Istanbul and Ankara. The events followed clashes between police forces and protesters gathered in Istanbul. In Istanbul the police used gas and water cannon to break up the rally.

The protesters were demanding that Gezi Park not be demolished.

After the clashes a local court decided that the works in the park should be suspended.
