In Syria death toll exceeds 93,000 people

The death toll in Syria reached at least 93 000 at the end of April, but the true number from the violence now in its third year may be much higher, the United Nations human rights office said on Thursday.

Every month since July 2012, about 5 thousand people are killed in Syria, since December 1 last year 27 thousand people have been killed.  The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navanethem Pillay, noted that the level of violence in Syria is "shockingly high." The previous report, published in November 2012, cited about 60 thousand deaths. The highest number of casualties was recorded in the provinces of Damascus (17.8 thousand), Aleppo (11.9 thousand) and Idlib (10.3 thousand). This is followed by Dara (8.6 thousand), Ham (6.4 million) and Deir ez-Zor (5.7 thousand). 82.6% of the victims are male

The report has been compiled on the basis of the data on 263 thousand murders, and only those killings where the full name of the victim, date and place of death are known were taken into account. Details are thoroughly checked in order to avoid repetitions, RIA News reported.
