Over nine percent of Turkish 13 to 19-year-old girls are married and almost 6 percent have a child, Hürriyet Daily News cites research conducted by Hacettepe University.
Professor Hilal Özcebe says that underage marriages in Turkey pose a serious public health risk, adding that around 16 million women around the world under the age of 18 get pregnant every year, with over three million of those pregnancies ending in unsafe miscarriages.
