One policeman was killed and two others injured after hitting an unidentified explosive device in the Republic of Chechnya in Russia’s volatile North Caucasus Region, local police says on Sunday.
The bomb went off on Saturday morning when police were carrying our search operations in a forest south of the village of Roshni-Chu in Chechnya’s Urus-Martan district.
Russia has fought two bloody civil wars in Chechnya since the Soviet Union’s dissolution in 1991. But, while insurgency remains a pressing issue in neighboring parts of the North Caucasus, fighting in Chechnya has vastly diminished under strong-arm leader Ramzan Kadyrov.
