Kamaz driver who crashed into bus in New Moscow arrested for two months

The Tverskoy district court of Moscow has today arrested Grachev Arutyunyan, the Kamaz driver accused of a traffic accident in New Moscow that led to 18 deaths.

Arutyunyan will remain in custody until September 13.

The investigator asked for Arutyunyan's arrest on the grounds that he is a citizen of another country. "Arutyunyan is a citizen of Armenia, and therefore may escape, and, given the gravity of his crime, the necessary measure of restraint for him is to be taken into custody," RAPSI quotes the investigator.

The defendant's lawyer, Eric Chabanov, asked for other preventive measures that would not involve his client being taken into custody. "My client has a dependent elderly father and a wife and a child who are in Armenia," the lawyer said.
