Two Ka-32 helicopters of the emergency agencies of Stavropol and Rostov are putting out fires on the domestic waste dump in Sochi, which has been burning for 24 hours, RIA Novosti reports, citing the head of the information and PR group in Sochi, Vadim Ramazanov.
The fire was first spotted yesterday at approximately 14.00. Experts say that the fire started as a result of methane coming from rotting waste.
The hectare of fire is being put out by two helicopters and 7 firefighting groups.
The helicopter from Stavropol arrived on Wednesday, another one from Rostov came on Thursday. Ramazanov said that the fire will not be contained in less than 24 hours.
157 men and 112 units of equipment are operating.
The Loo waste dump is the only operating dump near the resort of Sochi, after the closing of the the dump in Adler.
