Georgia is trying to extinguish the fire that started on August 4th in the forest near the village of Atskuri in the Akhaltsikh district (Samtskhe-Javakheti region, southern Georgia). Local media report that the fire is spreading.
According to Trend, citing the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, the situation is complicated by the fact that old spruces are on fire.
1000 rescuers are trying to extinguish the fire in Atskuri. The fire is 5-7 km away from populated areas but the population is not under threat at the moment. The firemen do not know the size of the fire because they cannot enter the forest. The Minister of Environmental Protection, Goga Khachidze, is in Atskhuri supervising the extinguishing work.
