Abkhazia is commemorating the defenders of the country who died in the 1992-1993 war. The day is called the Commemoration Day of Defenders of the Fatherland, ITAR-TASS reports.
Abkhaz President Alexander Ankvab, Vice President Mikhail Logua, Prime Minister Leonid Lakerbaya, MPs, governmental officials, veterans laid flowers at the Glory Park.
Georgia sent forces to Abkhazia on August 14, 1992. They clashed with the local resistance, resulting in a war for 413 days. Up to 12,000 Abkhaz people were involved in the war. Over 2,700 people died and over 5,000 were injured in the conflict.
