Fires and smog cut short Moscow mayor's vacation

The Mayor of Moscow, Yury Luzhkov, had to return from his therapeutic vacation ahead of time due to the wild-fires near Moscow and the unceasing smog, RIA Novosti reports.

Presently there are 49 major fires (35 forest and 14 peat) in the Moscow Region, almost 210 hectares of countryside are affected. The south-eastern winds blow the smoke from these fires to the city, causing an extremely difficult ecological situation.

The smog has been covering Moscow for four days, with the concentration of carbon monoxide exceeding normal indicators. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Emergency Situations reports some stabilisation of the wild-fire situation.

Mr Luzhkov, who recently sustained an injury and was due to receive treatment from the 2nd to the 22th August, had to return to his duties.
