Ablyazov remains in custody

A French court has upheld the detention of Mukhtar Ablyazov, accused by Kazakhstan of financial irregularities of more than $6 billion during his tenure as chairman of the board of directors of Kazakhstan's BTA Bank. The decision to reject the request for his release was rendered by the Chamber of the Court of Appeal of Aix-en-Provence, ITAR-TASS reported. According to Ablyazov's lawyer Bruno Rebstock, "the court is not convinced that Ablyazov's security will be ensured better if he were to be released." The court also "found insufficient" the guarantees that the banker will not leave the territory of France. As previously reported, Mukhtar Ablyazov was detained by French police on July 31 near Cannes and was arrested on August 6.
