Zaur Umarov (born in 1987) was killed in Buynaksk (Dagestan) at about 8.30 pm when the police tried to check his documents, RIA Novosti reports.
The other militant accompanying Umarov managed to escape.
Zaur Umarov joined the militants in October 2012 and was put on the federal wanted list. He was a specialist for bomb construction.
A police was injured in when Umarov and the militant accompanying him opened fire at the police.
