The international Peace Fire relay ‘World Harmony Run’, that started in April in a park in Hiroshima, passing the border of Azerbaijan, has arrived in Dagestan, RIA Novosti reports.
The relay is dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, with the participation of over 300 sportsmen from 30 countries. The flame, lighted from volcanic lava, will arrive in Moscow in September. The run started in Japan, going through South Korea, China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.
On the border between Azerbaijan and Dagestan the relay was welcomed by the deputy minister of sport Magomed Rabadanov. Then the fire headed to Derbent. On Wednesday it will arrive in Makhachkala and on Thursday it travels to Khasaviurt, then on to Chechnya.
The relay has been held annually since 1987, initiated by international social and non-governmental organizations. It has already covered 140 countries. Russia started participating in 1991. Over a million people have participated in the event.
