Afghan soldiers to be trained in Georgia

A delegation of the Georgian Defence Ministry held meetings at the Afghanistan Defence Ministry in the framework of an official visit to Afghanistan.

Georgian Defence Minister Irakliy Alasaniya and deputy chief of the Georgian Armed Forces Joint Staff, Colonel Vladimir Chachibaya, were received by the Afghan Defence Minister Bismillah Khan Mohammadi.

The parties discussed strengthening bilateral relations after completion of the ISAF mission, cooperation in the defence sector and training of Afghan soldiers at Georgian military schools, the Georgian Defence Ministry said on Thursday, Trend reports.

As Irakliy Alasaniya stressed, the parties reached some agreements.

"According to one of the agreements, a memorandum of understanding will be prepared and then signed between our ministries, and it will give us a legal basis for more active assistance in building the Afghan armed forces. We will train Afghan soldiers at Georgian military schools. Also, in the future, after completion of the ISAF operation, we will have the opportunity as a result of direct links to support the Afghan people, which is important not only for our bilateral relations, but also for the alliance," he said.
