Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said today that the reason for the attack on the Russian embassy in Libya was the murder of a Libyan officer by a Russian citizen.
"According to the available information, the immediate reason for the aggressive actions against our embassy was a murder committed by a Russian citizen. On October 1 Yekaterina Ustyuzhaninova killed a Libyan army officer and stabbed his mother. Ustyuzhaninova has been arrested, and a criminal case has been filed against her. The Libyan authorities will inform us about all the circumstances of the incident and the investigation," RIA Novosti quotes Lukashevich.
Relatives and friends of the deceased decided to take revenge for the killing and attacked the embassy. "The armed attackers managed to break into the embassy, where staff and their family members took refuge in the protected areas," Lukashevich said.
