The family of Furkan Dogan, one of the 9 people killed in an Israeli attack on the Freedom Flotilla in 2010, will not receive compensation from Israel for his death, Hurriyet Daily News reports.
A Turkish court dismissed the family’s demand for compensation because Turkey cannot sentence Israel as a sovereign state. According to international law, sovereign states and their official representatives cannot be sentenced by other countries.
9 people died and 30 were injured on the Mavi Marmara ship of the Freedom Flotilla on May 30-31, 2010. The ship was on its way to Gaza with humanitarian cargo. Israel recommended the flotilla go to Port Ashdod. The captains of the flotilla refused to change course and the Mavi Marmara was attacked in neutral waters.
