Despite protests of some Circassian groups against the Winter Olympic Games, the majority of them view it as a positive event, a holiday of sports and unity of peoples, says Nikolai Silayev, Director of the Caucasian Cooperation NGO.
He notes that some organizations said that Circassians had lived in the North-West Caucasus and had been deported by the Russian Empire to Adygeya, Krasnodar Territory or Turkey at the end of the Caucasian War. Some activists called the Caucasian War the Circassian Genocide.
Silayev reminds that a big delegation of Circassian communities visited the Olympic Games, the Circassian House that played an important role in the cultural program of the Games. They met Putin. They met Vice Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak in October.
Some Internet activists said that there was no clear Circassian component shown at the Fisht Stadium at the opening of the Olympic Games. Silayev explains that the opening was focused on Russia as a whole, not solely on the Caucasus.
The expert proposed viewing of statements made in social networks as an indicator of social moods. Silayev says that he saw Circassian flags instead of photos of friends on Facebook.
