Professor Sobkin comments youth education in Russia

Professor Vladimir Sobkin of the Russian Academy of Education said that prevention of extremism could not have any results without positive ideals in modern Russian society. In his words, teaching young people to be civilized and cultured on the background of a multiethnic society was neglected. The professor reminded that a program named “Problems of tolerance and prevention of extremism in Russian society” (2000) had been scrapped for some unknown reason. The program formed the Center for Tolerance in the Education System.

Sobkin believes that strictness and punishments alone would hinder formation of ideals in social development. Concerning efficiency of the modern informative approach to educating young people, the expert mentioned an example. According to social polls, said the professor, a teenager was aware of legal acts but involvement of the teenager in interethnic conflicts would still be on the rise.

The expert pointed out that modern mass media demonstrated more violent forms to settle conflicts. He assumes that it is a serious problem of the new generation.
