Russia is marking Spring and Labour Day today, May 1st. Over 2 million people will take part in traditional marches organized by trade unions under the slogan "Worthy work - fair salary!" The May 1 demonstration at Moscow's Red Square will be organized today, for the first time since 1991.
Mikhail Shmakov, an official of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Russia, said that every May 1 demonstration was different from the ones before and the ones to come. Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Moscow Mayor Yuri Sobyanin were invited to join the demonstration.
Putin will also award five Labour Hero Stars in Saint-Petersburg today. This will be the second ceremony of its kind.
