Azerbaijan is marking the Day of the Republic. The Azerbaijani Democratic Republic was founded on May 28, 1918. In 1990, the day was made a state holiday. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his wife Mehriban took part in celebrations of the day at the Buta Palace.
Aliyev reminded about the hard times the country had gone through after 1991, had lost the territories of Shusha, Lachin, Kalbajar. Ilham Aliyev considers 1993 the first year of independence of Azerbaijan. In his words, Heydar Aliyev strengthened democratic institutions. The Constitution was adopted in 1995. The country formed a national ideology, founded the basis of its statehood, signed oil contracts. Azerbaijan has been contributing to energy security of other countries ever since.
After the speech, the ceremony of awards started. Artist Ogtay Sadykhzadeh received an award for achievements in figurative arts, People’s Artist Ramiz Guliyev for his performances, Tofik Nagiyev for a monograph on corrosion, Elmira Akhundova for a six-volume book about Heydar Aliyev.
A military march will start in Baku at 12.00pm today. The Baku Garrison will march through the capital in ten directions. Special events will be organized at training centers and officers’ centers in Baku, Ganja, Lankaran and Nazchyvan.
