Russia marks beginning of Great Patriotic War

On June 22 Russia commemorates the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, which started 73 years ago when Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union.

The Day of Remembrance and Sorrow marked today was officially introduced by President Boris Yeltsin in 1996.

On this day Russians commemorate the Soviet soldiers and civilians who died while struggling against the Nazis.

Mass events are expected to take place today in Blagoveshchensk, Oryol, Saratov, Irbit, Kaliningrad, Kursk, Nizhny Tagil, Khabarovsk, Cherkessk and other cities of Russia.

A number of activities are also scheduled to be held in Moscow with the main event held near the Kremlin.
