Moscow mourns metro accident victims

Moscow Vice Mayor Petr Biryukov said that 10 people in the first carriage died on the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line of the Moscow Metro. Moscow Healthcare Department Head Georgy Golukhov clarified that 106 out of 149 people requesting medical aid were taken to 14 hospitals. Over half of them are in grave condition.

10 people were taken to the First City Hospital, 10 to Hospital N67, 11 to the Botkinskaya Hospital, 10 to the Sklifosovsky Ambulance Institute, 8 to Hospital N64, 8 to Hospital N71, 7 to Hospital N7, 6 to Hospital N31, 5 to Hospital N36, 1 to Hospital N5. Helicopters were sent to transport people.Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin ordered executives to restore traffic in the metro in a few hours. The line connects Moscow with the Krylatskoye and Strogino districts. The Moscow government will pay relatives of the deceased 1 million rubles each and 500,000 to all passengers injured.Spokesman of the Russian Investigative Committee Vladimir Markin explained that the accident was caused by a sudden stop made by a train as a result of an alarm sounding. Staff of the Moscow Metro said it was a false alarm. Witnesses took photos with signs of smoke at the Slavyansky Bulvar and Park Pobedy stations.A session of the Moscow government was cancelled. Traffic on Kotuzovsky Avenue will be closed until 10.00pm. Russian Minister for Emergencies Vladimir Puchkov is at the scene of accident supervising rescuers personally.

Wednesday, July 16 has been declared  a day of mourning for the victims.
