The deputy mayor of Moscow for Housing and Public Works, Pyotr Biryukov, said that experts are looking into problems with the rails, technical malfunction in the undercarriages of the cars, but the track switch mechanism repaired with a piece of wire against all norms and rules is recognized as the main reason behind the disaster. 
One of the key witnesses in the catastrophe, the second driver, was put into a drug-induced sleep for faster recovery.
According to the latest official data, 23 people are dead and 150 hospitalized.
