Kabardino-Balkarian Acting Leader Yuri Kokov signed a decree yesterday, declaring September 20 the national day of Adyghes (Circassians). Majid Chachukh, the head of the Adyge-Khase public parliament of the Black Sea Adyghes-Shapsugs, vice president of the International Circassian Association, clarified that the idea of creating a holiday was an old one and people wanted a positive holiday.
Most events had a negative context, in his words, for example, the commemoration day of May 21. The official explained that September 20 was not connected to any specific historical date.
KBSU Rector Barasbi Karamurzov explained that Kokov had made the right decision. According to the rector, people had agreed to mark the holiday and only needed the official approval of the government. He added that the KBSU will mark the event too. In his words, foreign communities were waiting for the holiday. Karamurzov noted that another association of graduates of the university will be formed on October 12, it will probably mark the holiday too.
